With IUI, sperm are \u201cwashed\u201d and concentrated, and also placed directly into the uterus, which puts them closer to the egg.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This process can increase the likelihood of pregnancy in certain couples who have had difficulty getting pregnant.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-item\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"accordion-title plain\"><button class=\"toggle\"><i class=\"icon-angle-down\"><\/i><\/button><span>Who does IUI help?<\/span><\/a><div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Who does IUI help?<br \/>IUI is a relatively noninvasive and less-expensive fertility treatment compared to more invasive and costly treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). In some cases, couples may begin with IUI before progressing to IVF if needed. IUI may be the only treatment needed to achieve pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">IUI can be performed using a male partner\u2019s sperm or donor sperm. IUI is most commonly used in these scenarios:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">unexplained infertility<br \/>mild endometriosis<br \/>issues with the cervix or cervical mucus<br \/>low sperm count<br \/>decreased sperm motility<br \/>issues with ejaculation or erection<br \/>same-sex couples wishing to conceive<br \/>a single woman wishing to conceive<br \/>a couple wanting to avoid passing on a genetic defect from the male partner to the child<br \/>IUI isn\u2019t effective in the following scenarios:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">women with moderate to severe endometriosis<br \/>women who have had both fallopian tubes removed or have both fallopian tubes blocked<br \/>women with severe fallopian tube disease<br \/>women who have had multiple pelvic infections<br \/>men who produce no sperm (unless the couple wishes to use donor sperm)<br \/>In situations where IUI isn\u2019t recommended, another treatment such as IVF may be helpful.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-item\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"accordion-title plain\"><button class=\"toggle\"><i class=\"icon-angle-down\"><\/i><\/button><span>What to expect when you have the procedure?<\/span><\/a><div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">What to expect when you have the procedure<br \/>IUI is a relatively painless and noninvasive procedure. IUI is sometimes done in what is called the \u201cnatural cycle,\u201d which means no medications are given. A woman ovulates naturally and has the sperm placed at a doctor\u2019s office around the time of ovulation.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Each medical facility and doctor will have their own specific instructions for the IUI procedure. After your initial consultation, when you and your physician have determined that IUI is the best course to pursue, a typical timeline may include the following:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You may have several office visits while on your period for bloodwork, ultrasounds, and medication instructions.<br \/>If medications are prescribed, you\u2019ll usually start taking them while on your period.<br \/>About a week after starting the medication, you\u2019ll likely have another ultrasound and possibly bloodwork.<br \/>Depending on your test results, your doctor will determine when you\u2019re ovulating, and you and your partner will return to the clinic. This is typically 10 to 16 days after starting the medications.<br \/>Your male partner will provide a semen sample the day of the procedure, or the donor sperm will be thawed.<br \/>The sperm will immediately be taken to a lab where they will be \u201cwashed.\u201d This is a process where the seminal fluid and other debris are removed so that the sperm is very concentrated and unlikely to irritate the uterus.<br \/>IUI is quick and typically painless and does not require anesthesia.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<style>\n#col-823433121 > .col-inner {\n  padding: 0px 40px 0px 0px;\n}\n<\/style>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n\n\t<div id=\"col-544466644\" class=\"col medium-10 small-12 large-6\"  >\n\t\t<div class=\"col-inner\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\n<div class=\"accordion\" rel=\"\">\n\n<div class=\"accordion-item\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"accordion-title plain\"><button class=\"toggle\"><i class=\"icon-angle-down\"><\/i><\/button><span>What are the risks?<\/span><\/a><div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There is a small risk of infection following the IUI procedure. Your doctor will use sterile instruments, so infection is very rare.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If medications are used to induce ovulation, there is a risk of pregnancy with multiple babies. Since fertility medications increase the likelihood that more than one egg will be released, they also increase the likelihood of pregnancy with multiples. Your physician will try to balance the amount and type of medication, along with bloodwork and ultrasound monitoring, to prevent too many eggs from being released at one time.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Sometimes the ovaries over-respond to fertility medications (particularly the medications given as injections) and a condition called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome may result. A large number of eggs may be matured at one time and possibly released. This can result in an enlarged ovary, fluid buildup in the abdomen, and cramping. In very rare cases, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome can result in fluid buildup in the chest and abdomen, kidney problems, blood clots, and twisting of the ovary.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-item\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"accordion-title plain\"><button class=\"toggle\"><i class=\"icon-angle-down\"><\/i><\/button><span>What\u2019s the success rate like?<\/span><\/a><div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n\n<p class=\"Body\" dir=\"ltr\">Every couple will have a different response to IUI, and it can be difficult to predict its success. A number of factors affect the outcome, including:<\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li>age<\/li>\n<li>underlying infertility diagnosis<\/li>\n<li>whether fertility drugs are used<\/li>\n<li>other underlying fertility concerns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Body\" dir=\"ltr\">Pregnancy rates following IUI are varied based on your reasons for needing fertility treatment.
