The test looks &#8220;upstream&#8221; where digestive fluid comes from &#8212; the\u00a0liver, gallbladder, and\u00a0pancreas\u00a0&#8212; to where it enters the\u00a0intestines. In addition, ERCP can be used to treat problems in these parts of the\u00a0digestive system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-item\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"accordion-title plain\"><button class=\"toggle\"><i class=\"icon-angle-down\"><\/i><\/button><span>What Happens During ERCP?<\/span><\/a><div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">During an ERCP, a gastroenterologist (doctor who specializes in treating diseases of the gastrointestinal system), uses a special\u00a0endoscope\u00a0(a long, flexible tube with a light and camera at the end) to examine the inside of the\u00a0digestive system. The doctor identifies the place where the bile duct comes into the intestine and then feeds a tiny catheter (a plastic tube) into the duct and squirts in a contrast agent while X-rays are taken. The contrast agent allows the doctors to see the bile ducts, the gallbladder, and the pancreatic duct on the X-rays.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Once the source of the problem is identified, the doctor may then treat it by performing one of the following procedures.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Sphincterotomy.\u00a0This involves making a small incision (cut) in the opening of the pancreatic duct or the bile duct, which can help small\u00a0gallstones, bile, and pancreatic juice to drain appropriately.<br \/>Stent\u00a0placement.\u00a0A stent is a drainage tube that is placed in the bile duct or the pancreatic duct to hold the duct open and allow it to drain.<br \/>Gallstone(s) removal.\u00a0ERCP can remove gallstones from the bile duct, but not from the gallbladder itself.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-item\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"accordion-title plain\"><button class=\"toggle\"><i class=\"icon-angle-down\"><\/i><\/button><span>Is an ERCP Safe?<\/span><\/a><div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">An ERCP is considered a low-risk procedure; however, complications can occur. These can include\u00a0pancreatitis, infections, bowel perforation, and bleeding. Patients undergoing an ERCP for treatment, such as for gallstone removal, face a higher risk of complications than patients undergoing the test to diagnose a problem. Your doctor will discuss the risks of possible complications before the test.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<style>\n#col-573869243 > .col-inner {\n  padding: 0px 40px 0px 0px;\n}\n<\/style>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n\n\t<div id=\"col-1280536684\" class=\"col medium-10 small-12 large-6\"  >\n\t\t<div class=\"col-inner\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\n<div class=\"accordion\" rel=\"\">\n\n<div class=\"accordion-item\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"accordion-title plain\"><button class=\"toggle\"><i class=\"icon-angle-down\"><\/i><\/button><span>How Should I Prepare for ERCP?<\/span><\/a><div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Before having ERCP, let your doctor know about any special medical conditions you have, including:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Pregnancy.<br \/>Lung\u00a0conditions.<br \/>Heart\u00a0conditions.<br \/>Allergies\u00a0to any\u00a0medications.<br \/>If you have\u00a0diabetes\u00a0and use\u00a0insulin. You may need to adjust the dosage of\u00a0insulin\u00a0the day of the test. Your\u00a0diabetes\u00a0care provider will help you with this adjustment. Bring your diabetes medication with you so you can take it after the procedure.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If you are taking\u00a0blood-thinning medications such as\u00a0aspirin,\u00a0clopidogrel\u00a0(Plavix),\u00a0dipyridamole\u00a0(Persantine),\u00a0enoxaparin\u00a0(Lovenox), or\u00a0warfarin\u00a0(Coumadin), your primary doctor may ask you to hold these medications or prescribe an alternate method for thinning your\u00a0blood\u00a0before the procedure.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Do not discontinue any medication without first consulting with your primary or referring doctor.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Do not eat or drink anything for eight hours before the procedure.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You may be drowsy for some time after sedation, so you should ask for help from a responsible adult who can take you home after the procedure. You should not drive or operate machinery for at least eight hours because the medication given during the procedure may cause drowsiness.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You may need to stay overnight in the hospital after the procedure, so pack personal items you may need.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-item\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"accordion-title plain\"><button class=\"toggle\"><i class=\"icon-angle-down\"><\/i><\/button><span>What Happens After ERCP?<\/span><\/a><div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You will stay in a recovery room for about 1-2 hours for observation. You may feel a temporary soreness in your throat. Suck on throat lozenges to relieve the pain.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A responsible adult must take you home after the procedure. It is also recommended that someone stay with you for 24 hours after the procedure.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Do not drive or operate machinery for at least eight hours.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Stay overnight within a 30-minute drive of the hospital so you can get to the emergency room quickly to be evaluated, if necessary.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The results will be sent to your primary or referring doctor, who will discuss them with you.
