It\u2019s a lot like a\u00a0varicose vein\u00a0that you get in your leg. It might feel like a bag of worms.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It usually shows up above one of your testicles, most often the left one. You can usually see it when you stand up, but not when you lie down.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It should be harmless, but it can be uncomfortable or painful. And it might affect your fertility or cause your testicles to shrink.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This condition is fairly common and usually affects young men. About 10 to 15 of every 100 men have this problem. It\u2019s not uncommon for boys to develop varicoceles as they move through puberty.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If your varicocele causes problems, your doctor may send you to a specialist called a\u00a0urologist.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-item\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"accordion-title plain\"><button class=\"toggle\"><i class=\"icon-angle-down\"><\/i><\/button><span>Causes<\/span><\/a><div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Doctors aren\u2019t sure what causes this condition. It could be a problem with\u00a0blood\u00a0flow in the spermatic cord, which carries\u00a0blood\u00a0to and from your testicles. If valves inside the veins in the cord don\u2019t work like they should, the blood backs up and the veins get wider.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Each testicle has a spermatic cord holding it up. The spermatic cord has veins, arteries, and nerves. The veins have valves that keep blood flowing in one direction &#8212; toward the\u00a0heart. If a valve in the spermatic cord doesn\u2019t close the way it should, blood backs up and causes a varicocele.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When varicoceles happen in teen boys, it\u2019s often because of the quick growth they undergo during puberty. The testicles need more blood than normal as they develop, and any kind of problem in the veins can keep the blood from getting where it needs to go<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-item\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"accordion-title plain\"><button class=\"toggle\"><i class=\"icon-angle-down\"><\/i><\/button><span>Symptoms<\/span><\/a><div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Varicoceles rarely hurt. You may not even know you have one until you or the doctor sees it.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If yours does\u00a0cause pain, it might:<\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li>Switch from dull to sharp<\/li>\n<li>Get worse when you stand or exert yourself, especially for a long time<\/li>\n<li>Become more intense as the day goes on<\/li>\n<li>Go away when you lie on your back<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You may also have problems fathering a child. Varicoceles are one of the most common\u00a0causes of infertility\u00a0in men. If not, the doctor might ask you to stand, take a deep breath, and hold it while you bear down. They\u2019ll call this the Valsalva maneuver. It helps them feel enlarged veins.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If the exam isn\u2019t enough to be sure, they might take an\u00a0ultrasound\u00a0of your scrotum. A scrotal ultrasound uses sound waves to take pictures of the inside of your body. The pictures can tell your doctor how large the veins in your scrotum are, how large your testicles are, and which direction the blood is flowing in your scrotal veins.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The size of the lump in your testicle helps your doctor classify your varicocele on a grading scale of 0-3. A Grade 0 is the smallest, and can be seen only with the help of an ultrasound. Grade 3 is the largest, and means your varicocele is big enough that it changes the shape of your scrotum.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-item\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"accordion-title plain\"><button class=\"toggle\"><i class=\"icon-angle-down\"><\/i><\/button><span>Treatment<\/span><\/a><div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Not all varicoceles require treatment. It\u2019s mostly done if:<\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li>You\u2019re in\u00a0pain<\/li>\n<li>You have problems fathering a child<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019re a boy whose left testicle is growing smaller than the right<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There are no meds to prevent varicoceles. If yours hurts, the doctor may tell you to take ibuprofen for the pain.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If you do need treatment, the goal will be to tie off or remove the veins that supply blood to your spermatic cord. You might have:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Varicocelectomy:<\/strong>\u00a0The doctor will make a 1-inch cut into your scrotum. They\u2019ll use a magnifying glass or microscope to see small veins better. You might get\u00a0local anesthesia\u00a0to numb the area, or you may need\u00a0general anesthesia\u00a0to help you sleep through the procedure.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Laparoscopic surgery:<\/strong>\u00a0The doctor makes a much smaller cut and uses it to insert tubes that hold surgical tools and a special camera to help see inside you. You\u2019ll get general anesthesia so you can sleep while it\u2019s done.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Results from both of these treatments are similar because the cuts are small. It\u2019s rare, but you may notice:<\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li>The varicocele doesn\u2019t go away or comes back<\/li>\n<li>Fluid in the testicles (your doctor will call this\u00a0hydrocele)<\/li>\n<li>Your testicular\u00a0artery\u00a0gets injured<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-item\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"accordion-title plain\"><button class=\"toggle\"><i class=\"icon-angle-down\"><\/i><\/button><span>Recovery<\/span><\/a><div class=\"accordion-inner\">\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You can probably go back to work a day or two after surgery. But you\u2019ll need to take it easy &#8212; no exercise &#8212; for about 2 weeks.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Recovery after an embolization is a little quicker. You\u2019ll still need a day or two off from work, but you can get back to the gym in a week to 10 days. Your varicocele may be more likely to come back after this treatment, but sometimes it\u2019s the better choice.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If you have the procedure to help with fertility, the doctor will test you in 3-4 months. That\u2019s how long it takes for new\u00a0sperm\u00a0to grow. You\u2019ll probably see improvements in 6 months, but it could take a year. A little more than half of the infertile men who have the procedure benefit from it.
